What this solves
The Schiphol → Amsterdam train (€6.40) is one of Europe\'s great airport links — 17 min direct, no transfers, train leaves from below the terminal. But pick the wrong destination and you can waste an hour. Schiphol → Den Haag takes 35 min by intercity, 60 min by bus; switching to Maastricht means a transfer at Utrecht Centraal.
- Six real destinations: Amsterdam Centraal, Utrecht, Rotterdam Centraal, Den Haag Centraal, Eindhoven, Maastricht — with door-to-door times including walk-to-platform minutes.
- Luggage tradeoff modeled: train and bus have luggage racks; taxi/Uber handle bags door-to-door but cost 4-8× more. For 3+ suitcases, the math flips.
- Last-train warning: the last intercity from Schiphol departs around 00:40 to Centraal direction. After that, the night bus (N97) costs €4.50 and takes 40 min. A delayed flight past 02:00 means €45–€60 taxi.

How to read results
NS intercity pricing from Schiphol is "toeslag" based: a flat airport surcharge of about €1.40 above the regular station-to-station fare. The calculator uses 2026 reference figures from NS\'s published tariff grid.
For 1 person with 1 bag, the train wins on six of six destinations. The tipping point is 3+ people sharing: a Schiphol → Centraal taxi (€50–€60) splits to €17–€20 per person, beating €6.40 per train ticket only when the group is 3-4 and you have luggage. Past midnight, taxi is the only option that runs continuously.
Limitations
- Taxi price range is loose. Schiphol to Amsterdam center is €50-€60 by TCA meter; nights/weekends add €5-10. Uber X is €24 to €32 — surge pricing can double that during peak hours.
- Last train varies by direction. The 00:40 from Schiphol goes direction Amsterdam/Utrecht only; the last train to Eindhoven leaves ~23:40. After that your only option is taxi.
- ICE and Eurostar ignored. Schiphol has direct ICE to Frankfurt (€50-99) and Eurostar to Brussels/Paris; the calculator focuses on NL domestic.
- No arrival-day variance. Schiphol customs wait varies from 5 min to 90 min depending on time-of-day. Calculator assumes average.
FAQ
Can I use my OV-chipkaart on the Schiphol train?
Yes — check in at the yellow NS gates before boarding, check out at your destination station. The €6.40 fare is the same as a paper ticket but no €1 one-time charge for the card.
Does the airport train run 24h?
No. Last intercity is around 00:40 to Centraal, 23:30 to Utrecht, 22:40 to Eindhoven, 22:10 to Maastricht. After that: night bus N97 to Amsterdam (€0) or taxi.
Why is the Schiphol train so cheap (€6.40)?
NS gets government subsidy for airport links; the fare is set to compete with the €6.50 airport bus. Comparable airport links in Europe (Heathrow Express, CDG Roissy) run €4-15.
What about the Schiphol Travel Taxi (shared)?
Schiphol Travel Taxi is a shared-ride service to your hotel door. €31 for 1 person, €29 per person for 2, €27 per person for 3-4. Much cheaper than a regular taxi, slower than a train, and door-to-door. Book at the arrivals desk.
