NS peak vs off-peak calculator

Decides whether the €10/year Dal Voordeel subscription actually saves you money given when you actually ride. Factors in spitsuren, weekend rules, and the often-missed off-peak “fiets gratis meenemen” perk.

What this solves

NS prices look simple until you stack the off-peak subscription on top of day tickets. The €10/year Dal Voordeel card gives 40% off off-peak single tickets only — peak hour trains cost the same with or without it. Most guides ignore that, so tourists buy the card expecting discounts and find they were on a peak train.

The calculator

Real intercity distance, not as-the-crow-flies. Amsterdam–Utrecht = ~45 km, Amsterdam–Eindhoven = ~150 km.

Each round trip = 2 single fares. Include commutes and weekend trips.

Weekends and Dutch school holidays are 100% off-peak. Be honest.

Bike is free only off-peak with Dal Voordeel. Peak-hour bike tickets stay full price (€5.55/leg).

How to read results

The verdict shows the absolute € difference over a full year given your inputs. Negative numbers (red) mean the subscription costs you more than walk-up singles at the same pattern; positive (green) means it saved money after subtracting the €10 fee.

Two non-obvious things this calculator includes that most blogs miss: (a) the bike perk — at €5.55/leg saved it can flip the verdict from “skip” to “subscribe” with as few as two bike trips per year; (b) the round-trip effect — even short-distance commuters get meaningful savings because both legs of the daily commute fall into Dal Voordeel territory outside the morning peak.

Limitations

FAQ

What exactly counts as off-peak?

Mon–Fri 09:00–16:00 and 18:30–06:30 the next morning, plus all day Saturday, Sunday, and most Dutch public holidays (NS lists them). The 06:30–09:00 morning rush and 16:00–18:30 evening rush are spitsuren. Trains departing in the first minute of off-peak count as off-peak — even a 09:00 sharp departure is off-peak.

Does Dal Voordeel work on the metro or tram?

No — Dal Voordeel is NS-only. GVB, RET, HTM, and Arriva don\'t honor it. You still need separate transit fares or a GVB day ticket for city travel.

Can I buy Dal Voordeel as a tourist?

Yes, at any NS ticket machine or counter. You also need a personal OV-chipkaart (anonymous €7.50, no name) — but to load the subscription you\'ll need to register the card with your name at a service desk. Most NS stations have English-speaking staff.

Does Dal Voordeel replace the dagkaart (day ticket)?

No. The €23.50 dagkaart is for unlimited travel that day. Dal Voordeel discounts individual off-peak singles only. If you ride 4+ intercity legs on a single day, the dagkaart beats Dal Voordeel even with the subscription.
