What this solves
The standard Amsterdam canal cruise sells at €15–€22 and gets reviewed like all coach travel are interchangeable. They aren’t. The Museumboot (lines 401/402) doubles as hop-on/hop-off transit to 9 museums; the cruise is one-and-done.
- Five operators rated: Stromacher, Lovers Canal Cruises, Blue Boat, Those Dutch Guys, plus the small-canal tour boat operators.
- Museumboot logic: GVB Museumboot line 402 costs €24 day, stops at Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Stedelijk, Hermitage, FOAM, Scheepvaartmuseum — and you can hop off, visit, and hop on.
- Photo stop opportunity: only Some Dutch Guys and smaller electric boats pause for photos. Big ships run continuous narration loops.

How to read results
The score reflects priority + group size + time-of-day, not cost alone. Many guides rank by price; this one ranks by fit-for-purpose. The GVB Museumboot (line 402) is rarely listed in canal-cruise comparisons because it doesn’t feel like a cruise — but the dual-purpose as hop-on/hop-off transit makes it the best deal for most visitors.
The per-museum column shows how many stops each option includes. Only Museumboat options include museum access; others are view-only.
Limitations
- Museum boat hours are limited. GVB line 402 runs 10:00-17:00 (March-Oct) and closes at 16:00 (Nov-Feb). Last ferry from Rijksmuseum is 16:30; missing it means a tram back.
- Photo stops are skipper-discretion. Those Dutch Guys and Stromacher promise stops but in practice the skipper might keep moving for schedule or traffic.
- Hop-on fees separate. Museumboat covers the boat; museum entries are extra unless you have Museumkaart or I amsterdam City Card.
- Wave damage. Tour boats stir up canal water — splash damage to electronics is a thing. Small holders charge small boat operators with PFD-lifejacket access on the bow.
FAQ
Is the GVB Museumboat €24 per trip or per day?
Per day. You board, ride, hop on/off as many times as you want until closing. Combined with Museumkaart (€74.90/year), this becomes a free museum ferry: a museum to museum for free.
Why don’t all operators use the same boats?
Amsterdam canal regulations cap boat size and engine type in the central canal ring (Grachtengordel). Most big cruise boats cannot enter some narrow canals; small operators with low-deck electric boats get exclusive canal tours.
Is the Museumboat faster than a tram?
Slower but more scenic. Tram 2/5 from Centraal to Rijksmuseum is 8 min. Museumboat is 25 min. The cruise has a seat number; the museum boat you can sit at any boat if it has space.
Can I buy Museumboot tickets at the boat?
Yes. Cash or pin at the dock. The €6.50 GVB day ticket is also accepted on line 402 if you have it.
