Netherlands Compass

ATM fee trap detector

Geldmaat is fee-free with a Dutch debit. Euronet at the tourist square charges €5–€10 regardless. This calculator totals your real cost over a trip — and works out the breakeven frequency at which a fee-free travel card justifies its annual fee.

What this solves

There are roughly three flavours of ATM in the Netherlands and the cost difference is roughly 10×. Most travel guides warn "avoid Euronet" without explaining why the bill doubles: Euronet applies a 1.5–3% FX margin on top of its €4.99–€6.99 fee, then your home bank charges another 1–3% on the conversion. Two markups = your €100 becomes €88.

The withdrawal cost calculator

Set how much you'll withdraw per stop, how often, and where. We'll compute your trip total in fees + FX markup, plus the breakeven frequency for a fee-free travel card.

Per visit. Geldmaat has no minimum, but Euronet often refuses under €20.

Tourists typically take 1 withdrawal per 2–3 days of city stays.

Choose based on your itinerary — first day in Dam Square ≠ hotel in De Pijp.

Some travel cards charge 0% FX; most retail banks charge 1–3% on top of the ATM fee.

How to read results

Effective cost over face value is the only number that matters. A €5 ATM fee on a €100 withdrawal is 5%; the same fee on a €300 withdrawal is 1.7%. Withdraw larger amounts less often at Geldmaat, and your effective cost halves.

Breakeven frequency assumes the alternative is a fee-free travel card with €0 annual cost. If the saving per withdrawal is €1.50 and the card costs nothing per year, any single withdrawal covers the cost. The card is paying for itself from the first ATM.

The FX markup line is sometimes hidden by your bank. Euronet adds its own 2.5% on top; if your home bank adds another 1%, you're paying 3.5% FX on top of €5.99 fee. Total cost: €9.49 per €100.

Limitations

FAQ

Is there any ATM that takes Visa/MC with no fee at all?

For tourists: almost none. Some bank-branch ATMs (ING inside the branch lobby, not the outdoor pinautomaat) don't surcharge foreign cards, but hours are limited. The reliable path is a fee-free travel card (Wise, Revolut Standard, Schwab) at any Geldmaat.

Can I withdraw at any supermarket in the Netherlands?

Some Albert Heijn XL and Jumbo stores have Geldmaat inside; some smaller AH stores only have cashback at the register (no separate fee, but you must buy something). Cashback is the best-kept secret for tourists.

Why does my home bank charge me €3 even though the ATM shows "no fee"?

That's your bank's foreign-transaction fee, not the ATM operator's. It applies to any withdrawal outside your home country, regardless of the ATM. The fix is to use a card that waives the cross-border fee.

Is contactless ATM withdrawal supported?

Yes on most Geldmaat terminals since 2023 — tap your phone or card, no PIN pad for small amounts up to €25. For larger amounts the terminal still requires PIN. Useful for grabbing €20 lunch cash without lining up.

About this tool

This ATM fee trap detector aggregates 2026 reference fees for the three main ATM categories in the Netherlands (Geldmaat, Euronet, bank branches). Fees reflect posted rates on operator websites as of October 2026; they change. Intended audience: travelers who will use ATMs at least once during their trip and want a real cost number rather than a generic "avoid Euronet" warning. Limitations: the calculator models a single trip and assumes uniform withdrawal size; it does not model Wise's free-withdrawal quota month by month or Revolut's weekend markup windows, which can shift the breakeven calculation for heavy ATM users.
